The process of getting the right hearing instruments for your child is important and ongoing. It requires strong motivation and active participation from you as a parent. Even the most advanced hearing aids successfully fitted will not help your child if he or she does not wear them or if they are not maintained.
Your child's willingness to wear hearing instruments will most likely depend on his or her degree of involvement and understanding. The more your child is involved in the process and the more your child understands the better his or her acceptance and willingness to wear hearing aids will be. One way to obtain the acceptance is to assure that your child’s first experiences with the hearing aids are positive. For instance, make sure that the first sounds your child hears with the new hearing aids are gentle, comfortable sounds such as music or friendly talk.
Also be aware of the importance of being motivated as a parent. If you are not motivated and don't accept what is going on, your child will immediately react and reject the hearing aids. Remember to show joy and happiness when the child first wears the hearing aids.
To make your child feel comfortable about the hearing aids it is very important that the child associates wearing hearing aids with something nice. In the beginning, try only using the hearing aids when something good and comfortable is happening. Such things could be listening to music, singing songs, or reading a bedtime story.
No matter how well your child adapts to the hearing aids there will always be times when he or she takes them off – sometimes much to your frustration. Be aware, though, that the child sometimes does take the hearing aids off to get attention. He or she knows that it will attract the attention of an adult – parent or teacher.
